Get to Know… Mi Cocina

Everyone’s favorite Tex-Mex restaurant, Mi Cocina, best known as “MiCo” to regulars, opened in Highland Park Village in February 1993, shortly after the first location opened just north of The Village with great success. Restaurant owner and founder “Mico” Rodriguez came from a family of restaurateurs and grew up in the business. He had a vision of serving authentic family recipes on white tablecloths, and that’s exactly what he did – served familiar Tex-Mex dishes in an upscale, yet comfortable setting.

Rodriguez partnered with three Dallas businessmen to grow the restaurant company, turning Mi Cocina into an instant success and a true Dallas dining staple ever since. Between bites of brisket tacos and sips of the famous Mambo Taxi® margarita, MiCo is a place to come as you are and enjoy the lively ambience and authentic food. Known for its humble hospitality, neighborhood feel, hand-crafted dishes and high-quality ingredients, it’s become a local hot spot.

Mi Cocina is a family centric restaurant that focuses on high quality service and ingredients. It has become a local hot spot known for its signature Mambo Taxi margarita.

Never empty or without a buzz from families and group gatherings, the Highland Park Village Mi Cocina location also houses one of the coolest bars in town, the third floor Monkey Bar. The bar gets its name from guests who noted that being up there was like being up in the trees, with scenic views of The Village. The intimate space is cozy, vibrant and magical, especially when the trees in Highland Park Village are lit.

The popular third floor Monkey Bar got its name from customers who said it felt like being up in the trees above The Village.

The best kept secret bar recently underwent a large remodel and closed for three months last spring. Reopening in late June 2019, Monkey Bar tripled its square footage, refreshed the interior, and added an outdoor patio that will ultimately have a retractable roof for climate control. The team also created a fresh menu for the new and improved Monkey Bar, offering exclusive food and drink items only available upstairs.

The Monkey Bar underwent a large remodel in the spring of 2019, refreshing the inside space and expanding by adding an outdoor patio.

The new Monkey Bar menu added an extensive tequila list comprised of tequilas found by CEO and Director of Culinary on various trips throughout Mexico. They also added almost two dozen new handcrafted cocktails made with cold pressed juices and interesting ingredients like honeycomb, chapulin salt and egg whites.

The new and improved Monkey Bar also updated its menu to include exclusive food and drink options only available for guests to enjoy upstairs.

Once the remodeled Monkey Bar opened for business in early summer, the downstairs dining area underwent a refresh of its own. But the interior décor wasn’t the only thing new about the restaurant. Mi Cocina also added a number of vegan and vegetarian options to the menu after receiving several requests for healthier options or how guests could customize existing menu items to be vegan. Instead they created new dishes that offer great flavor and are true to their roots. They now have appetizers, salads, tacos and enchiladas that are all vegan. These items include the new Spicy Black Bean Dip, La Flaca Salad, Tacos de Papa, Smothered Black Bean Enchiladas, and the Crispy Guacamole Tacos.
