Get to Know…Balenciaga

Founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1917, ready-to-wear and accessories brand, Balenciaga has been a long standing pillar in the luxury fashion world.

The Spanish clothier established a strong vision and design approach in women’s ready-to-wear, focusing heavily on tailoring as well was angular and widened silhouettes that were considered radical when first debuted. Currently the brand operates more than 100 stores worldwide and has added accessories, men’s ready-to-wear, fragrance and eyewear to its global portfolio of products.

In October of 2015, parent company, the Kering Group and Balenciaga welcomed Demna Gvasalia as the new artistic director. Gvasalia is a German national of Georgian origin and co-founder of the ready-to-wear brand Vetements, which he still continues to be involved in.

Prior to joining the fashion house, Gvasalia completed his studies at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and spent time working in the design departments of Masion Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton.

Gvasalia’s first collection for the brand, Autumn/Winter 2016, stayed true to Balenciaga’s meticulous focus on the relationship between a woman’s body and her clothes. Voluminous skirts, angled jackets, wide, open collars and mixed floral prints characterize the pieces that comprise the Autumn/Winter 2016 Collection. Gvasalia’s unique point of view is present and represents a new and modern interpretation of what sophistication looks like within the Balenciaga label while staying true to the brand’s style heritage.
