Step 1

Wash your face with a creamy cleanser, cleansing oil, or balm. Apply a small amount all over your dry face and massage gently. Then use a little bit of water to emulsify; remove with a warm, damp washcloth. Please be gentle — your face is not a dish!

The initial cleanse is so important. It helps remove pollution, sunscreen, and stubborn makeup. The cleansers I recommend also remove eye makeup and even waterproof mascara. (Note: If the product explicitly instructs to avoid the eye area, follow instructions.) My favorite cleansers, which I use regularly, can be applied around the eyes. See them below.

Step 2

Use eye makeup remover or micellar water to remove any makeup left around the eyes.

Step 3

Apply a gel, foaming, or cream cleanser for the second cleanse. All of these can be used on wet or dry skin for a deeper clean. If used on dry skin, massage your face with a little water to emulsify, then remove with a warm, damp washcloth.

Your skin will thank you for taking this extra measure and double cleansing. You will see a new glow as acne and bad breakouts disappear. I have witnessed many of my clients, friends, and co-workers transform their skin by adopting this routine. Sometimes something as simple as cleaning your face correctly helps!

Skin Care Tips

• If you are wearing a lot of eye makeup, use cotton rounds with a little warm water to remove it before starting the double cleanse. This step saves your washcloths from getting stained.
• If your makeup has oil in it — for example, mascara — a cleansing balm is the best option for the first cleanse.
• Avoid packaged cleansing wipes. They are too harsh on the skin. Keep a basket of washcloths under or near your sink. The natural fibers of the cloth are less harsh on your skin. I prefer white ones, as I like to see what I have removed.
• Give your skin some moisture with rosewater before the first step. It is the perfect base to start your routine.
• The goal is to marinate your skin — exfoliate, hydrate, and moisturize.
• “I regret taking care of my skin,” said no one ever!
